The subject of machinery condition monitoring has been recently receiving considerable attention in India owing to concerns related to equipment reliability and safety. This increasing interest is primarily due to the significant impact of economic changes and strong competition in the global market. This course will provide students/engineers/managers with the state of the art techniques in machinery condition monitoring along with the recent developments in the field of signal processing, thermography, ultrasonics apart from the traditional noise and vibration monitoring. There will be demonstration of realtime machinery health monitoring by various condition monitoring aspects.
A. R. Mohanty is a professor and also the Shyamal Ghosh and Sunanda Ghosh Chair Professor at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. Professor Mohanty obtained his B.Sc Engg (Hons) degree in Mechanical Engineering from NIT Rourkela, M.Tech degree from IIT Kharagpur and PhD from the University of Kentucky, USA. He was also a Post Doctoral Fellow at the Purdue University at its West Lafayette Campus in the USA. Prior to joining IIT Kharagpur he worked in the R&D department of Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, USA. Prof. Mohanty has also worked in the R&D of Larsen and Toubro Limited, Mumbai, India. Professor Mohanty has done pioneering work in the areas of motor current signature analysis for fault detection in rotating machines and has a patent on the same. Another major research contribution of Professor Mohanty has been in the use of natural materials for noise control. Professor Mohanty has been a consultant to more than 100 industries in India and abroad. He has also conducted many sponsored research projects in these areas from different agencies. Professor Mohanty has more than 150 journal and conference publications, three book chapters and one book on u201cMachinery Condition Monitoring: Principles and Practicesu201d, CRC Press, (2014), to his credit. His NPTEL and GIAN lectures on Machinery Condition Monitoring and Industrial Noise Control are available on YouTube. Professor Mohanty has had many visiting professor positions at universities in Singapore, France and the United States of America. He has received several awards like the Chancelloru2019s Award for Outstanding Teaching at the University of Kentucky (1993), Rais Ahmed (2009) and M. S. Narayanan Memorial (2015) Award of the Acoustical Society of India, Star Alumnus Award of NIT Rourkela (2015).
