The developments in modern western art challenged not only the traditional concepts of art but it also challenged our visual perception. Through a series of art movements led by extremely innovative artists, modern art redefined itself continuously in terms of idea, medium, technique and social relevance. It changed the paradigm of art once and for all. A chronological study of the modern western art highlighting a few significant artists and their contributions thus unfolds a fascinating story of art that left a deep impact on the global culture.
Prof. Soumik Nandy Majumdar is currently is an Assistant Professor at Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan in the department of History of Art, Kala Bhavana (The Institute of Fine Arts & Crafts). Prof. Majumdar has taught as a Visiting Faculty at IIT- Kanpur, in the discipline of Fine Arts, under the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. He completed his BFA and MFA in History of Art from Santiniketan and M.S.University, Baroda respectively. He is involved in teaching art history, conducting courses on art-appreciation, art criticism, art curating and researching on art-education.
