The course will cover the fundamentals of materials science including the formation of chemical bonds, the properties of the states of matter, the development and the basic characteristics of the structure of materials, phase diagrams, concepts of rheology, mechanical behavior and simple failure models, deterministic and stochastic fracture mechanics, and the treatment of composites. The construction materials treated in the course will include bricks and stone, metals and alloys, wood and wood products, concrete and other cement-based materials, and asphalt.
Prof. Radhakrishna G. Pillai is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Madras. He received his M.S. & Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, USA. Hehas coauthored more than 30 scientific publications in the area of materials and structural performance, especially on corrosion, service life prediction, and structural reliability. Hiscurrent research interests include the development of corrosion test methods, monitoring and prevention of corrosion in concrete structures, bond performance of corroding prestressed concrete systems, service life estimation, and grouting ofpost-tensioned systems. He teaches courses on construction materials, maintenance and rehabilitation, and materials testing.
Prof. Ravindra Gettu is a Professor of Civil Engineering at IIT Madras. After completing his PhD degree from Northwestern University (USA) in 1990, he was the Director of the Structural Technology Laboratory of the Technical University of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain, until 2004. He has co-authored more than 400 scientific and technical publications in the areas of concrete technology, effective use of admixtures, self compacting concrete, and fibre reinforced concrete. He is active in RILEM, the International Association of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Structures and Systems, based in France and in the Indian Concrete Institute. He has consulted for many leading construction materials manufacturers and projects. He has taught this course for the past 10 years at IIT Madras, along with Concrete Technology.
